Every show tries to be bigger than itself. It's a fact of life. It tries to make an episode that goes way out of it normal comfort zone and does something extremely different. However, most of the time it doesn't work.
Take last night's conclusion of the "epic" 2-part Castle event, "Linchpin". Castle, a murder-mystery-drama-comedy, tried to become a serious Bourne-type spy thriller. And did a really bad job at it.
Now, don't get me wrong. I love Castle. It's just that this episode tried so hard and failed so bad. First off, right of the bat, what genius came up with the idea to do an episode about WWIII in the middle of a murder-mystery show's season. There is absolutely no tension what so ever. Of course, they stop WWIII from happening. This isn't the type of show that can pull of WWIII.
On top of that, the episode itself was just so predictable. It was like somebody watched a direct-to-DVD Steven Seagal movie and just did everything that movie did. I mean, Castle's former lover and CIA agent friend turned out to be a traitor? You mean that was an incredibly obvious red herring? Shocker. Now, I didn't really hate this episode some much as I felt embarrassed by it. They obviously tried so hard, but just could pull it of. Maybe next year.
Best Moments:
- That car would not take that long to fill up with water. Plus, how deep is the river? They kept sink for at least 3 minutes.
- Esposito brought some laughs.
- The actual breakdown of the dominoes was really cool... if then had been some actual tension.
